Bates

The name Bates could have two distinct origins. One is that it is a version of the name Bate, a short form of the name Bartholomew. The name could therefore mean 'a rich man'. Bates could also be a form of the Old English word for a boatman which was 'bat'. It mostly functions as a surname.
