Cohen is the English version of the Hebrew name “Kohen” which means 'a priest' in Hebrew. Not everyone bearing the name Cohen, however, are members of the priestly class, as many Jews changed their names to Cohen to avoid serving in the Russian army because priests were exempted from service.
