Ginger originates in English language and is taken from the name of a plant or spice. As a feminine given name it was popularized by the American actress, dancer and singer Ginger Rogers, even though in her case Ginger was just a diminutive of her original name, Virginia. In the United States, Ginger remains a popular name until today. It functions as a surname as well.
