Merche is a diminutive of Mercedes. The name Mercedes originates in Spanish language. Merced means "mercy", thus the plural, Mercedes, is translated as "mercies". It refers to Maria de las Mercedes, or in English Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Mercy. However, more modern association with a German automobile brand comes to mind as well.
